Petr the Great in amsterdam

Introduction by Tom Higgins
Few operettas can have such a vivid setting
as Albert Lortzing’s Zar und Zimmermann.
Set in a shipyard in Holland where a
Russian Tsar has disguised himself as a worker, it tells a tale of courtship and international intrigue. Much of Zar und Zimmermann’s appeal lies in its charming flow of infectious melody, which reflects the best of mid-19th century European
Romantic Operetta.
Among the many tunes to treasure is the
Act ll tenor aria sung as a tribute to local feminine beauty. Also in Act ll there is the highly acclaimed sextet – Lortzing’s remarkable fusion of music and drama in which he creates an acknowledged masterpiece.
